Pregnancy Over 40: Geriatric I Was Not

Pregnancy Over 40: Geriatric I Was Not

I have always wanted to be a mom.

When I got pregnant with my daughter at 42, I was elated. There was also a lot of uncertainty, and for me, I only had one friend who could relate. All of my other friends either had older children or teenagers.

I had no idea how important the support of a fellow pregnancy-over-40 friend would become. There were so many appointments. Not always because something was wrong, but because of my age.

Although I had some great providers, some did not ease the anxiety I experienced from being labeled geriatric.

The definition of geriatric is relating to old age. I did not feel old at all. I felt established, mature, and capable of handling motherhood. However, there was still an uneasiness that came with having a baby at this age.

Enter my 40+ bestie, Camesha.

After most of my appointments, I would call her, and regardless of how my appointment went, she always told me, “It will be fine.” There was comfort in her words because I knew she had experienced pregnancy after 40. She was with me throughout my pregnancy and until my daughter was almost one year old. Her unexpected passing and absence made me realize even more why support is essential during and after pregnancy.

After losing my mother and then my dear friend shortly after my daughter was born, it reaffirmed my passion for supporting new mothers and families during this time. Through Nurture Works, I am committed to helping as many new parents as possible feel heard and supported.

Maybe you feel uncertain about what is to come during your pregnancy. Maybe you are like me and don't have a friend who can relate. Maybe you feel behind.

I am here as your 40+ bestie to tell you that you are not behind, and even during the tough days:

“It will be fine.”
