Enjoy Your Newborn One Day at a Time | Encouragement for New Parents

As you may have already figured out, the newborn phase is one of my favorite stages of development. I've always loved babies, and throughout my nursing career, caring for newborns has been the most rewarding part of what I do.

I've also learned that this season can be one of the most anxious and overwhelming for new parents.

Every stage of your child's development brings new challenges. But I believe the newborn period feels especially difficult because of one thing: the unknown.

You can't rely on experience yet. There are no established routines. Every feeding, diaper, nap, and cry can leave you wondering if you're doing the right thing. Babies also change quickly during those first weeks, which means what worked yesterday may not work today.

More than anything, becoming a calm, observant parent is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your baby.

When I became a mother, I made a simple rule for myself that I still follow today whenever a new concern comes up.

I give myself 48 hours to worry about it.

If it still needs my attention after that, I address it. If the concern has resolved, I let it go.

That reminder helps me remember that not every difficult day becomes a difficult week, and not every challenge becomes a long-term problem. Some things simply improve with time.

I know you've probably heard it before, but it's true.

Your newborn really will grow faster than you think.

Take time to enjoy today's cuddles, today's tiny fingers, today's sleepy stretches, and yes, even today's cries. There is something incredibly special about the innocence and complete dependence of a newborn that only lasts for a short season.

If anxiety begins to steal that joy, don't carry it alone.

Lean into your village.

Call your pediatric provider sooner rather than later if you need reassurance. You don't have to wait until you're overwhelmed or wondering if you're "overreacting."

Make the call.

Get the support.

Then come back to what matters most.

Enjoy your baby.

One day at a time.
