How to Build Confidence as a New Parent: Presence Over Perfection

I've been there.

Wanting to get everything right. The perfect pregnancy. The perfect nursery. The perfect delivery.

Then, if something doesn't go as planned, there can be an overwhelming sense of guilt. Somehow, we convince ourselves that it was our fault.

Where does this come from?

Most of the time, comparison.

Comparison really is the thief of joy.

I remember hearing that phrase for the first time and realizing how true it was. Maybe you have a friend whose pregnancy seemed effortless. A sister who has the support at home that you wish you had because you moved to a new state. Maybe your baby spent time in the NICU like my daughter did.

I remember replaying everything I did during my pregnancy and even the day she was born, wondering if there was something I had done "wrong." Was there anything I could have done differently?

Then I realized something that changed the way I looked at the experience.

Even though it wasn't the delivery I had imagined, we were both safe, and she was finally here.

Don't get me wrong. There is real grief and disappointment when things happen differently than we expected. Those feelings are valid.

But I also realized that my job wasn't to be perfect.

It was to be present.

That simple shift helped me stop blaming myself and begin finding acceptance and joy.

I want to encourage you to give yourself grace.

You won't always get everything right, and that's okay. Parenting isn't about perfection. It's about showing up every day, loving your baby, and learning along the way.

Confidence isn't something you're expected to have on day one. It's something you build one feeding, one diaper change, one cuddle, and one day at a time.

Start with the basics.

Love them.

Feed them.

Change them.

Then build from there.

As your baby grows, you'll learn new skills, face new challenges, and celebrate new milestones together. Before long, you'll notice something has changed.

You aren't trying to become the perfect parent anymore.

You're becoming your baby's parent.

And that's where confidence begins.

Presence over perfection.

Newborn care. Made simple.
