Dressing Your Newborn. Made Simple.

I have a confession to make.

One of the things that inspired me to design the PeaPod is rooted in something I see all the time: overdressed newborns. It's actually a pet peeve of mine.

What you might not know is that I'm also guilty of doing it with my own daughter.

(Gasp.)

It was Christmastime, and my daughter was about a month old. She had received a Christmas-themed fleece sleeper as a gift. Since she weighed about 5 pounds and had been born prematurely, I thought it was the perfect choice. I knew I didn't want her burning extra calories trying to stay warm.

So I gave her a bath and dressed her in the sleeper.

I even took a photo of her in her nursery to send to my friend and thank her for the gift.

But something wasn't right.

She wasn't excited about it. She started crying. I thought maybe she was hungry, so I tried to feed her. She wouldn't latch. I walked with her, rocked her, and tried to comfort her, but nothing seemed to work.

Then I removed the sleeper.

She went right to sleep.

That night, she slept peacefully in nothing but her diaper.

That experience taught me something important: overdressing a newborn is much easier to do than many parents realize.

Every baby is different.

Some babies need an extra layer, while others are perfectly comfortable with less. My daughter happened to be one of those babies.

As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I still see overdressed newborns regularly. Many parents worry that their baby is too cold when, in reality, babies are often more comfortable than we think. When we're uncertain, our instinct is usually to add another layer.

You may have heard the recommendation to dress your baby in one more layer than you're wearing. Think of it as a starting point, not a rule. Every baby is different, and learning your baby's cues is often more helpful than counting layers.

Sometimes the simplest approach is the best one.
