I remember getting the not-so-great news that my sister was throwing me a baby shower. I've never really been a fan of being in the spotlight, but I'm working on it.
Historically, I had always been the guest at baby showers. From measuring the pregnant belly with toilet paper and drinking juice from a baby bottle to scrolling through an endless gift registry trying to find the perfect present, I could happily skip all of it.
But this time, it was my turn.
I called my sister with one request.
"No games, please."
She quickly reminded me that she was in charge and that my only job was to show up.
My other assignment was creating a baby registry.
As I started adding items, I quickly realized how overwhelming the process can be. Every website seemed to recommend hundreds of products. Every checklist looked different.
It left me wondering one simple question.
What does a newborn actually need?
Instead of filling my registry with everything I could find, I focused on the essentials I knew my daughter would actually use during her first 12 weeks. I also asked my sister if we could have a gift card baby shower because I knew there would be unexpected expenses after she arrived. We ended up giving our guests the option to purchase registry items or bring gift cards.
Looking back, I was surprised by how many of those essentials we actually used.
